The three-channel video, Bitcoin Mining and Field Recordings of Ethnic Minorities is based on Chinese artist Chuang LIU’s field trip to Garzê Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province in Western China. It takes the form of a speculative journey, highlighting aspects of history and evolutions of technology, infrastructure, ecology, and finance. By mixing found footage with the artist’s own documentation, the work first shows the building of early information networks in China. It intertwines anthropological insights and science fiction’s imaginary and connects hydraulic projects with Bitcoin mines in the country. Thus, exploring a constant chain of exchange between energy and information.

The work demonstrates how we are all embedded in systems and networks in one way or another. The artist offers a convincing meditation on the destructive political impact of the race for energy resources in our capitalist times. But it also provides a message of empowerment, urging us to reconsider the geological surface, materials, and entangled memories of the Earth to “live deliberately”.

ผลงานชุดนี้ชี้ให้เห็นว่าเราทุกคนล้วนถูกตรึงอยู่ในระบบและเครือข่ายไม่ทางใดก็ทางหนึ่ง ศิลปินได้เสนอการครุ่นคิดที่ทำให้คล้อยตามถึงผลกระทบอันใหญ่หลวงทางการเมือง ที่ผู้คนในโลกทุนนิยมต่างแข่งขันเพื่อช่วงชิงแหล่งพลังงาน กระนั้นก็ยังส่งสารที่เปี่ยมพลัง กระตุ้นเตือนให้กลับมาใคร่ครวญถึงผืนธรณีวิทยา สสาร และความทรงจำมากมายที่สัมพันธ์กันของโลกใบนี้ เพื่อให้พวกเรา “ใช้ชีวิตอย่างระมัดระวัง” มากยิ่งขึ้น
