Echoes from Clouds by Japanese artist duo Koichi SATO + Hideki UMEZAWA is an installation consisting of video, sound, and fragrances. Set in the Kanto region of Japan, the work explores the metropolis and its living spaces and the mountainous forest areas that supply cities with water resources and electricity. The experience of remotely viewing topographical information and images of various lands in a living space that seems to be isolated from the potential threats of the natural environment is slowly changing our perception of the natural environment. On the other hand, devices such as smartphones that surround our modern lives all require energy. Sato’s video traces the far-reaching infrastructure of power transmission, some of which leads to the distant, dark mountains. Perfume with the “scent of sterilized artificial water,” which somehow triggers nostalgia for contemporary society, and sound by UMEZAWA based on field recordings, represent the invisible underside of physical reality, and yet make it a spatial experience. It spreads over the exhibition space like a mist on the surface of the water. This work depicts the misty, invisible anxiety about unsustainability that our society and bodies, supported by the infrastructure of water, potentially harbor.

เสียงสะท้อนจากหมู่เมฆ โดยศิลปินคู่ชาวญี่ปุ่น โคอิจิ ซาโตะ (Koichi Sato) และ ฮิเดกิ อุเมะซาวะ (Hideki Umezawa) เป็นผลงานจัดวางที่ประกอบไปด้วยวิดีโอ เสียง และกลิ่น โดยมุ่งเน้นสำรวจตัวเมืองและย่านที่อยู่อาศัยในภูมิภาคคันโตของญี่ปุ่น นอกจากนี้ยังแสดงให้เห็นพื้นที่ป่าบนภูเขาซึ่งเป็นแหล่งผลิตน้ำและไฟฟ้าให้กับเมือง ประสบการณ์ที่ได้เห็นข้อมูลภูมิประเทศจากระยะไกลและภาพที่อยู่อาศัยของมนุษย์แยกออกจากภัยคุกคามอาจเกิดขึ้นจากธรรมชาติน้้นกำลังค่อยๆ เปลี่ยนการรับรู้ของเราเกี่ยวกับสภาพแวดล้อมทางธรรมชาติ แต่ถึงกระนั้น อุปกรณ์ต่างๆ เช่น สมาร์ทโฟน ที่ช่วยอำนวยความสะดวกให้ชีวิตสมัยใหม่ของเราก็ล้วนใช้พลังงานทั้งสิ้น ผลงานวิดีโอของซาโตะติดตามโครงสร้างพื้นฐานของการส่งต่อพลังงาน ซึ่งบางครั้งก็นำไปสู่ภูเขาที่มืดมิดและห่างไกล อบอวลไปด้วย “กลิ่นของน้ำประดิษฐ์ที่ผ่านการฆ่าเชื้อ” ตัวผลงานกระตุ้นความรู้สึกโหยหาในสังคมร่วมสมัย เสียงที่อุเมะซาวะสร้างขึ้นนั้นมาจากการบันทึกเสียงภาคสนามเป็นตัวแทนของความเป็นจริงทางกายภาพที่มองไม่เห็น และสร้างประสบการณ์เชิงพื้นที่โดยกระจายไปทั่วบริเวณจัดแสดงผลงานราวกับหมอกบนผิวน้ำ แสดงให้เห็นถึงความคลุมเครือ ความวิตกกังวลที่มองไม่เห็นเกี่ยวกับความไม่ยั่งยืนที่สังคมและร่างกายของเราอาจจะเก็บซ่อนเอาไว้ ซึ่งได้รับการสนับสนุนจากโครงสร้างพื้นฐานของน้ำ
