Brazilian artist, Maxwell Alexandre was born in a catholic family in Rocinha, one of the largest favelas in Rio de Janeiro. His poetic consists in a construction of narratives and scenes based on his daily experiences in the city and in Rocinha, a favela that stands out for being the largest and most populous in the country, with about 70,000 inhabitants, located in the south region of Rio de Janeiro city.

Pardo é Papel series takes its name from the Portuguese word pardo, meaning ‘brown’, which refers to the widely available kraft paper that Alexandre uses as a support for his work as well as to the census-designated category used to describe Afro-Brazilian people and others of mixed race. The main motif around the series is the self-esteem of black people. It is about freedom, striking, ostentation, victory, bonanza and empowerment. Using this historically loaded term, Alexandre deliberately engages and contends with Latin American colonial and Afrodiasporic legacies that continue to affect how Black society is stratified in Brazil.

ศิลปินชาวบราซิล มักซเวลล์ อเล็กซานเดอร์ เกิดในครอบครัวคาทอลิกที่อาศัยอยู่ในโรซินยา ทางตอนใต้ของริโอเดจาเนโร ซึ่งเป็นย่านที่ได้ชื่อว่าเป็นสลัมใหญ่และมีประชากรมากที่สุดในประเทศ โดยมีผู้อยู่อาศัยประมาณ 70,000 คน เชิงกวีของเขาประกอบอยู่ในเรื่องเล่าและฉากที่อิงจากประสบการณ์ในชีวิตประจำวัน ณ เมืองแห่งนี้

ชื่อผลงานชุด Pardo é Papel ของเล็กซานเดอร์ ได้มาจากคำในภาษาโปรตุเกสว่า ปราดู (pardo) หมายถึง ‘สีน้ำตาล’ ในที่นี้สื่อถึงกระดาษคราฟท์ที่มีอยู่ทั่วไปซึ่งศิลปินใช้รองผลงานของเขา ตลอดจนคำที่กำหนดขึ้นตามหมวดหมู่สำมะโนประชากรเพื่อใช้เรียกชาวแอฟริกา-บราซิลและคนอื่นๆ ที่มีเชื้อชาติผสม เนื้อหาหลักของผลงานชุดนี้คือความภาคภูมิใจในตนเองของคนผิวดำ ยังหมายถึงเสรีภาพ ความโดดเด่น การโอ้อวด ชัยชนะ ความมั่งคั่ง และการเสริมอำนาจ อเล็กซานเดอร์เลือกใช้คำที่เต็มไปด้วยประวัติศาสตร์อย่าง ปราดู เพื่อ เข้าร่วมวงถกเถียงเกี่ยวกับอาณานิคมในละตินอเมริกาและมรดกจากการพลัดถิ่นของชาวแอฟริกันที่ยังคงส่งผลกระทบต่อการแบ่งชั้นของสังคมคนผิวสีในบราซิล
