Singaporean artist Sim Chi Yin’s series, Shifting Sands focuses on the global shortage of sand. Sand, besides air and water, is our most used commodity and a foundation for various forms of social infrastructure. The insatiable demand for this non-renewable resource has led to environmental impact where it’s mined and to mafias driving the lucrative business. The global depletion of sand is driven by rapid urbanisation and land reclamation, especially in China and other parts of Asia. Singapore is known as the world’s largest importer of sand per capita. It has reclaimed almost a quarter of its territory over the last 60 years. For the artist, the continuing story of sand is that of the global income gap writ large: wealthy states buy up land from their poorer neighbours and relocate it. The artist is mapping and researching this ongoing project on this looming global problem and presents a photographic installation to draw viewers’ attention to our hidden aspects of environmental and social crisis happening every day.
