Memories in Light

Memories in Light is an illuminative and sound installation by the Japanese architect Tsuyoshi Tane. The installation reactivates the hidden aspects of memory in the archaeological collection kept outside in the open storage at the Phimai National Museum. Artifacts of Phimai heritage, an ancient Khmer temple from the 10th-12th centuries, are laid to rest in this place. This timeless collection of massive ruins is deeply enshrined in large sandstone, crafted and carved with ornamentation of gods and beauties from nature. These numerous artifacts were often forgotten and passed over for many centuries, but the memories are still contained within the objects. Tane was inspired by these ancient artifacts, and he created a site-specific installation to connect archeological memories to contemporary experiences with the delicate movement of light waves through time and space. These waves resonate with overtones of sutras from Buddhist scriptures, as if digging to evoke countless memories. Those memories of Phimai’s heritage and the aesthetic capital of cities across the region and throughout Thailand.

ความทรงจำในแสงสว่าง คือผลงานจัดวางแสงและเสียงโดยสถาปนิกชาวญี่ปุ่น สึโยชิ ทาเนะ ที่ช่วยรื้อฟื้นความทรงจำที่ซ่อนอยู่ในโบราณวัตถุซึ่งถูกเก็บรักษาในพิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติพิมาย ชิ้นส่วนมรดกจากปราสาทขอมที่ก่อสร้างขึ้นในคริสต์ศตวรรษที่ 10-12 เหล่านี้ถูกเรียงรายอย่างสงบอยู่ภายในอาคาร ชุดของสะสมหินทรายขนาดใหญ่ถูกแกะสลักตกแต่งให้เป็นรูปทวยเทพและธรรมชาติอันงดงามไร้กาลเวลา ศิลปวัตถุจำนวนมากเหล่านี้อยู่มาหลายศตวรรษโดยถูกหลงลืมผ่านกาลเวลา แต่ความทรงจำยังคงอยู่ในวัตถุ ทาเนะสร้างผลงานจัดวางเฉพาะเจาะจงพื้นที่ขึ้นด้วยแรงบันดาลใจจากโบราณวัตถุเหล่านี้เพื่อเชื่อมความทรงจำทางโบราณคดีกับประสบการณ์ร่วมสมัย ผลงานของศิลปินใช้การเคลื่อนตัวของแสงอันประณีตท่ามกลางพื้นที่และเวลา สะท้อนไปกับเสียงของพระสูตรจากคัมภีร์ทางพุทธศาสนา ราวกับกำลังขุดค้นหาความทรงจำที่นับไม่ถ้วนของมรดกแห่งพิมาย และเมืองหลวงแห่งความงามของเมืองต่าง ๆ ทั่วทั้งภูมิภาคและประเทศไทย
