Redder is a sound installation by British-Singaporean artist, Zai TANG.  TANG is known for using field recordings to create soundscape compositions that reflect changes in natural environments.  Redder is inspired by the story of the Eastern Sarus Crane,  and is a site-specific work at the Thai Crane Research Center.  This bird was previously extinct in Thailand, but through the captive breeding programme of the Nakhon Ratchasima Zoo and partners, their population in the wild is growing again.  

However, Sarus Cranes remain under threat and are listed as “vulnerable” on the IUCN Red List. The work references this precarity, as well as the distinctive red neck of adult Sarus Cranes, which becomes redder during breeding season.

Redder is composed of field recordings made at the Wetland and Sarus Crane Learning Center in Buriram province, and moves between naturalistic and abstract refrains. Through this approach, the artist wishes to hold space for the listener to feel the Eastern Sarus Crane’s endurance in relation to extinction and our human attempts of co-existence.

เรดเดอร์ เป็นผลงานจัดวางเสียงโดยศิลปินชาวบริติช-สิงค์โปร์ ชื่อ ไซ ตั๋ง ซึ่งเป็นที่รู้จักจากการใช้เสียงบันทึกจากภาคสนามมาประพันธ์ภูมิทัศน์ของเสียงที่แสดงให้เห็นถึงความเปลี่ยนแปลงของสิ่งแวดล้อม ผลงานศิลปะเป็นแบบเฉพาะพื้นที่ซึ่งคิดเพื่อศูนย์วิจัยนกกระเรียนพันธุ์ไทย และได้รับแรงบันดาลใจมาจากเรื่องราวของนกกระเรียนพันธุ์ไทย ซึ่งเคยสูญพันธ์ไปจากประเทศไทยในอดีต แต่มีการเพิ่มประชากรในพื้นที่ธรรมชาติกลับมาอีกครั้งจากความพยายามในการเพาะพันธุ์ในพื้นที่ปิดของสวนสัตว์จังหวัดนครราชสีมาและแนวร่วม

อย่างไรก็ตามนกกระเรียนพันธุ์ไทยยังตกอยู่ในอันตราย และได้รับการขึ้นบัญชีเป็นสายพันธ์ที่มีความเสียงที่จะสูญพันธ์ในรายการสีแดงของ IUCN ผลงานชิ้นนี้อ้างอิงถึงภาวะอันตรายนี้ และคอสีแดงของนกกระเรียนที่แดงขึ้นเรื่อย ๆ (Redder) ระหว่างฤดูผสมพันธุ์

เรดเดอร์ นั้นประพันธ์จากเสียงที่บันทึกจากศูนย์อนุรักษ์พื้นที่ชุ่มน้ำและนกกระเรียนพันธุ์ไทย อ่างเก็บน้ำห้วยจระเข้มาก จังหวัดบุรีรัมย์ และแล้วศิลปินนำมาปรับต่างโดยขยับไปมาระหว่างความเป็นธรรมชาติกับความเป็นนามธรรม ศิลปินต้องการจะใช้วิธีการนี้เพื่อสร้างพื้นที่สำหรับผู้ฟังให้รู้สึกถึงความอดทนของนกกระเรียนและความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างการสูญพันธ์และความพยายามจะอยู่ร่วมกันของมนุษย์
