Pimarntip International Pavilion
The 2nd International
Thailand Biennale, Korat 2021
International Exhibition at the Indoor Pavilion of the Pimarntip Art Gallery
― The 2nd Thailand Biennale, Korat 2021 is set under the title, “Butterflies Frolicking on the Mud: Engendering Sensible Capital” by the artistic director, Yuko Hasegawa and a team of co-curators, including Tawatchai Somkong, Vipash Purichanont, and Seiha Kurosawa. The core theme of this edition addresses the richness of Nakhon Ratchasima Province that is embedded in natural phenomena and leads to historical, social as well as cultural prosperities. Based on the theory of ‘social common capital’ that generally includes the environment and surroundings, the main focus is not about humans, but the significance of bountiful environment and ecologies. For this reason, art is employed to simulate micro-ecologies within the main ecologies of Nakhon Ratchasima Province.
― These simulated models would emphasise and enhance the main ecologies that are scattered everywhere in the society and have become part of ways of life that are sometimes overlooked and forgotten. Art would hence highlight these aspects, bring about added values and prolong the abundance of the ecologies and social capital of Nakhon Ratchasima Province. Since the first edition, Thailand Biennale has mostly focused on outdoor, site-specific installations, but the curatorial team of the present edition has also acknowledged the importance of indoor exhibition space that would enhance new meanings and interpretations, thus breaking the boundary between art exhibited at different kinds of space.
That realisation led to the organisation of the international exhibition at the indoor pavilion of the Pimarntip Art Gallery in Pak Chong District curated by Panya Vijinthanasarn. As one of the core venues of the Thailand Biennale, Korat 2021, the exhibition features works from 38 Thai and international artists under the title, “Nature Reigns Supreme in the World: Art Has Freedom in Itself”, addressing changes occurring in the world we are living in, from time immemorial since Nature had kept balance for all existence on Earth until drastic changes occur and destroy such balance. The overconsumption of natural resources to meet human’s insatiable needs is addressed through art by the artists who work as historians in documenting and reflecting on the environmental and societal changes across time. Art therefore emphasises these changes and the significance of the existing conditions of people, society, cultures and resources, and aims at forging the awareness of the modest and sufficient ways of life and cultures.
This international exhibition will be held from 10 December 2021 to 31 March 2022 at the Pimarntip Art Gallery in Pak Chong District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province.
